Ringcraft

Rupert has been attending our local ringcraft classes since he was 6 months old. We went to our first class the week before our first show, which was leaving it a little late, however, we didn't disgrace ourselves and it was a lovely friendly show for our first outing. However, the couple more months of ringcraft training did show on our next outing.

We did very well in our first season, winning the Novice Shield in the Ringcraft Society's Annual Points Competition.

2006 was also a good year for us, Rupert was Runner-up for the "Dog with most points at Championship shows" competition and added another large rosette to his collection. He repeated this success in 2007 beaten this time by baby brother, Ari.

Latest Showing News

Rupert had a great start to 2009 winning Best Rare Breed under Melanie Spavin at Worcester & Malvern CS Open Show. He also took 2nd place in AV Gundog Open under Ray Strudwick. Worcester & Malvern have a good selection of classes which makes it much easier when you are trying to juggle two dogs and only one handler. Ari was entered in the AVNSC Gundog classes leaving Rupert the Rare Breed and AV Gundog classes. They both did extermely well and I am very proud of the pair of them.

Rupert will continue to fit his showing career around his Obedience and Agility competitions but I am hoping to get him out on the circuit a bit more this year - afterall he has to keep Ari on his toes.

Rupert got to catch up with all his old Ringcraft buddies at Bromsgrove CS Limit where he won the Sporting Open class and then a few weeks later he was back to the 3 Counties Showground for Mid Western Gundog. He really enjoyed the sunshine plus he had a good day in the show ring as well with a 2nd place in the Open class.

Rupert had his best ever Crufts with a 2nd in the Good Citizen class under Breed Specialist, Michaela Edridge. Unfortunately for Rupert he was slightly overshadowed by his younger siblings, Ari & Madjik who took BOB and BOS respectively. I am proud of both of my boys though. Congratulations are also due to Rupert's litter sister, Ellie, RBB, Dad, Arni, and Mum, Gypsy who won their Veteran classes and also to litter siblings Glen and Tomi on their placings.

Rupert's next outing was Windsor Gundog Society Open Show in April, this is one of our favourite shows, this time the judge was Ray McDonald (Roanjora). We travelled down with our Ringcraft friends Jan and Flinders and, as Rupert was in the same class as Ari, Jan handled Rupert to 3rd place behind brothers Ari and Stig who went onto BOB and RBOB respectively. Jan and Flinders were 2nd in their own class - well done!

Rupert was shown by Lisa Finney at Leominster Canine Society (thanks Lisa) where Judge Carole Coode placed him 2nd in Open and awarded him RBOB.

Rupert's second Championship show of the year was Birmingham National where Margaret Holmes was our Judge, she gave Rupert the VHC place in Open Dog. He was handled on the day by his breeder, Carol Macleod - thanks Carol! Rupert and Ari were book ends in that class with Ari taking 1st place and their brother Stig in the number 3 slot. Rupert's little sister, Madjik, took Best Bitch and his litter sister, Ellie, took Reserve Best Bitch - well done to Carol & Margaret and Sandra, Ray & Graham.

It seemed a long gap until Blackpool at the end of June. Rupert qualified for Crufts with a 1st place in Limit. He swapped handlers for the Rare Breeds and was shown by my Mum who made an excellent debut with him - they took the VHC in the Open class.

We then had a long showing gap until Coventry (Foleshill) in November, the breed judge was Jenny Miller. This is only the third year TOllers have been scheduled at this show and the word had got around - there was a nice entry of eight dogs. Rupert was 2nd in Open. We then went on to the Members Open Dog Stakes and I was thrilled when Rupert won this class under the BIS judge Stuart Band.

Our final outing for 2009 was the annual trip up north to Gundog Breeds Association of Scotland. They had really improved the classification this year and that was reflected inthe entries - 25 dogs! Rupert was 2nd in Limit behind his baby sister Caoimhe. It was a real family day with BOB going to older brother Stig, RBD going to his Erikachen nephew Django (who was also Best Puppy on his 6 month birthday) and RBB going to baby sister Caoimhe. Congratulations to Misty on her Best Bitch. To round off the family celebrations the Camusmor team of Stig, Rupert, Madjik and Caoimhe took the Breeders class and went onto to get Best Breeders in Show under the BIS judge Don Miller. What an end to the year!

2008 in Detail

Once again the plan is for Rupert to have a lighter showing year so we can concentrate on Obedience and Agility. 2008 started with a trip to Worcester and Malvern Canine Society's Open show where Breed Specialist Yvonne Burchell awarded him RBOB behind brother Ari.

After last year's successes Rupert was up in Open this year at Crufts where Gundog day was the Friday, it was a large class and we were outside the places - congratulations to litter brothers Glen, BOB, and Stig, RBD. Rupert's day though came on the Sunday where he was handled by Crystal Walker, representing Australia, in the International Junior Handling Competition. Crystal was the first Junior to request a Toller so between them they made history. The final was held in the Best In Show Ring on Sunday evening and when Crystal was shortlisted I have to admit to tears in my eyes - well done Crystal!

In April was the Birmingham & District Gundog & Terrier Club's Open show - one of my favourites and it was lovely to see such an entry of 10 Tollers here. Rupert was 2nd in Open and then Judge Kim Ellis awarded him Reserve Best of Breed.

Rupert's next Champ. show was Blackpool in June where he won Limit Dog under Judge John Thirwell who then awarded him Reserve Best Dog. Mum, Gypsy took Reserve Best Bitch. So he might not have qualified out of the box this year but he did it in style!

A week later and Rupert proved that I may have retired him a little prematurely by getting another Reserve Best Dog under Carole Coode. It was a smashing day for Camusmor. Gypsy won the Progeny class ably assisted by Amanda handling Ari, me handling Madjik, Sandra and Ellie, Emma handling Rupert and Michaela and Stig. Gypsy kept her winning ways up in the Breed classes taking Best Bitch with Stig BOB and Madjik Reserve Best Bitch. Congratulations also to half-sister Sky for her 4th in the Veteran Stakes and (difficult to work out the exact relationship so we'll say cousin) Crispy who was Best Puppy.

Rupert won his class at Rugeley under Brian Clarke of Flanova Tollers. He was Reserve in the Open class at Windsor Gundog under John Tiranti.

Our final Championship show of the year was Gundog Breeds of Scotland where Jonathon Daltrey was judging Tollers. There were only 5 Tollers there (10 were entered) and Rupert was the odd one out with no green edged card. Congratulations to brothers Stig (BOB), Ari (RBD), Gypsy (BB and Best Veteran) and Madjik (RBB).

2007 in detail

Rupert will be having a light year in the show ring in 2007 so we can concentrate on the working side. However, he will do a few shows including Manchester and Crufts. He started the showing year at Worcester and Malvern Canine Society's Open show on the 6th January. He had a very good day coming 3rd in a very strong AVNSC Gundog Open class and then first in the AV Rare Breed Open class.

Yet again Rupert qualified for Crufts at his first outing of the year - four years in a row now! He was 2nd in Post Graduate under judge, David Hutchinson. It was a good day for the family with Dad, Arni, hitting his half-century with 50 BOBs - a record I don't think will be beaten in a hurry. Precocious baby brother, Ari, was Best Puppy and Reserve Best Dog, brother, Glen, was Best Rare Breed and sister, Florrie, was Reserve Best Bitch in the Rare Breed classes and 5th in the Special Beginner stakes - well done everyone!

Rupert bought home two yellow cards from United Retriever Club's February Open show. He was third in the breed Post Graduate class and then third in the AV Retriever Open class.

Rupert was in the cards again at Crufts and got his first ever Crufts rosette this year from the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog class. He also did very well in a strong Post Graduate class making the shortlist with a Reserve. It was another good year for the family with Dad, Arni taking his 4th BOB at Crufts, RBD was big brother Stig. Best Bitch and Best Puppy was little sister Caoimhe and half sister Puddle was RBB.

On Easter Monday we were off to Nuneaton show at the Sports Connexion. Rupert was 3rd in the AVNSC Gundog Open class.

Two days later we were off to Windsor Gundog where the Toller judge was Ann Moss. Rupert was 2nd in his class. Precocious baby brother Ari was RBOB behind their brother Stig. Ari also went on to get 2nd place in the Junior Stakes under John Thirwell.

The Saturday of May Bank Holiday weekend was Mid-Western Gundog. Rupert won the Post Graduate class under judge, Sylvia Bunting and then went on to take RBOB behind baby brother Ari.

Rupert won the Post Graduate Dog class under Babs Harding at the Birmingham National Championship Dog Show. Well done to brother Glen, who won BOB, baby sister Caoimhe who was BOS and finally sister Florrie who was RBB.

A week later we made the long drive up to Edinburgh for SKC. It was a windy miserable day and Rupert was entered in both Obedience and Breed classes, the timing worked out well with the Obedience in the morning and they were just doing the Beginner presentations when Simon phoned to tell me that the Golden Retrievers, who were in the ring before us, were on Limit. Rupert worked well and got a KC Obedience Award of Merit in Beginners then he went onto to win the Post Graduate class under Ray Strudwick, this was his 5th Post Graduate win in breed at Championship show level so now I will move him up to Limit. Tollers are a non-CC breed so, strictly speaking, can't win out of Post Graduate but common sense has to prevail and where is the fun in remaining in a class where you have already beaten your rivals at leat 5 times. The challenge was a family occasion as Ari had won the Junior class and Mum, Gypsy won Open. This left me with no back-up handler so Simon had to take Bear in and he did a very good job. Rupert showed beautifully for his Dad and didn't look back at Mum like he did last year. Ari went Best Of Breed (his first at Championship level) and Gypsy took Best Opposite Sex - all in all a fun day out and well worth the long drive.

The first day in June saw us heading down the A34 to Newbury for Southern Counties. Our judge was Peggy Beisel-Mcilwaine from the USA and she pulled a good entry of 35 Tollers. This was Rupert's first real bash at Limit, he was still under the magic 5 Post Graduate wins when we entered but I decided to create some swap-over space by entering Rupert in the Limit class instead. Definitely a good decision as he won the class! Ari had won Junior so for a change I handled Rupert in the challenge, handing Ari over to his Breeder, Carol. Both dogs behaved beautifully and we were very pleased to come home with two red cards for the second show in a row.

From Southern Counties it was onto Three Counties, our local Championship Show. Our Judge was Colin Mackay and he gave Rupert the Post Graduate class, he had also given Ari the Junior class so I let Carol handle Rupert this time round. Congratulations to his litter brother Glen who was Rserve Best Dog. This was our third show now when our boys did a double and Rupert's fourth class win in a row - and this is the dog that I wasn't going to show much this year! We will continue to balance Obedience and Showing but I have proved to myself that I can handle two dogs at a Breed Show so if we are showing this year then I will have both boys with me.

Mrs F A Somerfield was judging Tollers at Blackpool. She gave Rupert his 5th class win in a row - Limit Dog. Rupert's litter brother Glen took Best Dog and Best of Breed - congratulations! This was our first time at Blackpool and its a nice show plus a good opportunity to catch up with some more northernly Toller friends. Rupert's little brother (and Ari's litter brother) Teddy qualifed as well as second cousin (?) Rio. It was a good day for the Shoredancer girls with Koda 1st and Rio 2nd in Puppy Bitch then Koda crowned it off by getting Reserve Best Bitch and Best Puppy - well done!

Next we were down the M5 to Exeter for Paignton where Jean Lanning was judging the breed. She placed Rupert in the Reserve (4th) slot in the Open Dog class. Ari was 2nd in Junior Dog.

August brings round United Retriever which is always very close to my birthday, we have traditionally done very well here and 2007 was no exception with Rupert taking the Limit class under Michaela Edridge with litter sister, Tomi, second. Ari won Graduate with his litter sister, Madjik, second which is almost a repeat of SKC earlier in the year. I handled Rupert in the Dog Challenge and he behaved impeccably but it was Ari's day winning Best Dog then going onto to take Best of Breed. Ari was handled by his breeder in the Dog Challenge - thank you Carol! Congratulations to Fergus on his Reserve Best Dog plus Rupert's litter sister, Ellie - Best Bitch and Reserve Best of Breed and proud Mum, Gypsy - Reserve Best Bitch.

Onto the end of August and the Bank Holiday weekend saw us at the Sports Connexion in Coventry twice. First up on the Saturday was Coventry (Foleshill) CA Open show who, I think, were scheduling Tollers for the first time. Unfortunately there were only my two Tollers entered. Our judge was Jonathon Daltrey and he gave both boys first in their classes then awarded BOB to Ari and RBOB to Rupert, who was handled in the challenge by Lisa - thanks Lisa! Precocious baby brother Ari went onto to get Group 4 under Trudy Short (Parkmist). Congratulations to Lisa and her Labrador Paddy who was Group 2.

Two days later on Bank Holiday Monday was Leicester City CS Open Show. There were no Toller classes this time so both boys were entered in the AVNSC Gundog classes under Ray Strudwick. Rupert was 3rd in Open, slightly outshone by baby brother Ari who was 1st in Yearling and went onto to take Group 3 also under Ray Strudwick. All in all a very successful weekend. We celebrated in the evening with a very muddy walk!

September saw us heading off down the M40 again for Richmond. The judge was Valerie Foss and Rupert won the Limit Dog class and Ari the Junior Dog class.

Then in October it was back to Great Barr for the Birmingham and District Gundog and Terrier Open Show where the Judge was Elaine Thomas (Claramand). Both Ari and Rupert won their classes so Phil Goodall did the handling honours for Rupert in the challenge. Ari took Best of Breed but the judge complimented both boys on their condition and how well muscled they were.

The following Friday we were off up the M6 for Midland Counties. There was no Limit class so Rupert was entered in Open dog and Judge Ruth Barbour made it a family affair with brother Glen first, Dad Arni second, brother Stig third, Rupert in the Reserve slot and then cousin Louis (Newfanova Elysium of Avonwharfe) VHC. I was thrilled! It was a good day in general for the family, Ari took his class then Caoimhe and Madjik did a 1,2 in Post Graduate bitch, Ellie took Open Bitch with Tomi third. 2nd and 4th in Open bitch went to half-sisters Sky and Puddle. Glen took BOB and Caoimhe Best Bitch - congratulations all!

Our final show of the year was the NSDTR Club of UK Breed Show, the 2nd they have run. Rupert was 3rd in Limit dog and then won the Special Working class and the newly donated Tivalake Trophy for Best Special Working. This was really special as he won this class at the inaugural show as well - it was a lovely end to the year and possibly Rupert's showing career as 2008 will definitely see him concentrating on obedience and agility while he leaves the showing to baby brother Ari.

2006 in detail

Rupert qualifed for Crufts at his first outing for the third year running at Manchester under Chris Atkinson. It was a good day for the Camusmor family with BOB going to Rupert's brother Stig, BOS going to his sister Ellie and RBD going to their brother Glen. Congratulations to all three of them!

At Crufts under Mick Howes Rupert got Reserve in the Good Citizen Dog class, coming home with a card for the second year running. Rupert's brother Glen had a good Crufts. Glen was RBD behind their father Arni who, on his 7th birthday, took BOB at Crufts for the 3rd time. Well done Arni and Glen!

Rupert at Crufts 2006

At Bath under Michaela Edridge Rupert won the Post Graduate Dog class and went onto to take the Challenge for Best Dog and was then declared Best Opposite Sex to his sister Ellie. Well done to both Rupert and Ellie plus Fergus and Maple for their Reserve Best of Sexes.

At National Gundog under Peter Upton Rupert was placed second in the Post Graduate dog class behind brother, Glen. Another good day for his family, His father, Arni, took Best of Breed and his sister, Ellie, Best Opposite Sex.

At United Retriever Club under Malcolm Smith Rupert won the Graduate class, which was a mixed sex class. This is his second red card this year. Congratulations again to Arni, Best of Breed; Ellie, Best Opposite Sex; plus, not forgetting his sister, Florence, who was Reserve Best Bitch.

At Bournemouth under Carol Coode Rupert was placed third in the Post Graduate dog class. Another good day for Camusmor - Stig and Glen did the double in the dog classes with Glen Reserve to Stig, who went onto take Best of Breed. Big congratulations to sister Tomi for her 1st place in Post Graduate Bitch but she lost out to her Mum in the challenge. Well done Gypsy!

At Welsh Kennel Club under Andrew Brace, Rupert took first place in the Post Graduate Dog or Bitch class - his third first place at Championship level this year. Family celebrations were in full swing with Best Dog and Best of Breed going to brother Stig with Glen RBD. Gypsy, his Mother, took Best Opposite Sex for the second show in a row with his sister Ellie RBB. However, the family celebrations did not end there! Glen took Best Rare Breed Gundog and Utility plus Reserve Best Rare Breed over the three days, then if that wasn't enough of an excuse to crack open the bubbly Stig was shortlisted in group! Well done Stig!

At City of Birmingham in the AVNSC Gundog classes Rupert won Post Graduate dog. This is his 4th Championship show win this year. His brother Glen took the Open Dog class then Best Dog and Best Opposite Sex - well done Glen!

At Darlington under Penny Williams Rupert won the Post Graduate class, this is his 4th first place in breed classes this year and qualifies him out of Graduate. Rupert gained a new handler for the challenge after his baby brother, Ari, won the Puppy class. Rupert wasn't impressed with being handled by Simon and kept turning round to watch me with the puppy instead. I think Simon might have to come to Ringcraft and practice being a backup handler now that we have two in the ring. The dog classes were a definite family occasion with Veteran and Reserve Best Dog going to Great Uncle Acer, Puppy to baby brother Ari, Junior to baby brother Teddy, Post Graduate to Rupert himself and Open and Best of Breed to his Dad, Arni. Congratulations also to Paige and Isla for their Best of Sex and Reserve Best of Sex.

NSDTR Club Show

Rupert had a very busy and successful day at the NSDTR Club Open Show. The judge for the day was Jeff Luscott and he placed Rupert first in the Post Graduate Dog class.

Rupert after winning the Post Graduate class at the NSDTR Club Open Show

Rupert after winning the Post Graduate class at the NSDTR Club Open Show.

An Obedience Display was planned for the Interval, however, the very successful team of Tanya Grigg and Teal (who are working A & B) were unable to make it so at the last minute Rupert & I and Maria and Tilly stepped in. Tilly had just won out of Pre-Beginners but Rupert hasn't competed properly yet. We demonstrated some basic exercises: heelwork, recalls (both Novice and A), retrieves and stays. Rupert and Tilly both did very well. I was particularly pleased with Rupert's retrieve and I am sure that none of the audience were aware that Rupert had never done an "A" recall before as he was foot perfect! The display was very well received.

The very last class was the Special Working Class and I was very happy when Rupert won this. As ours is a working breed it was nice to see such a large entry in this class.
